Learning: It’s Just Different Now

Today a student equipped with a smart phone can do research about a topic anywhere so why then would a student travel specifically to the library? A school space must be designed in such a way that students want to come and stay in the space. Is there comfortable furniture? Is there a high speed [...]

Laptops + Students = Global Reach?

Our middle school is what some would consider a leader in technology integration. Look we even won an award:)

But I just can’t help but notice that students are turning inward instead of leveraging this technology to collaborate. Which brings me to the idea of curriculum……..when students cover the same context as they did pre-laptop [...]

Considered one of the most important educational philosophers of the modern age, John Dewey unpacks, in his 1938 book the importance of viewing education as not purely a term that can be defined but more an ongoing process of experiences [...]

Learning to Respect Fragile Marine Environments in the Pool

This morning my 8th grade students learned a little about how to safely move around and explore underwater environments while snorkeling. They successfully moved around the coral reef (aka the pool with lots of fake seaweed and plastic sea animals) with out touching or disrupting the environment.
At the end of their underwater exploration time [...]

Curriculum

I spent a larger part of today adding a page on my school blog to outline the full curriculum: standards, essential questions and learning objectives. My goal in this endeavor….to make what is happening at school as transparent as possible. Will it help…only time will tell.
